The Travel Hack just got Stylish

single-image

Welcome to the all-new Travel Hack where things are bigger, brighter and better than ever before.

After Travel Bloggers Unite in Umbria, a conference where travel bloggers from across the globe come together to learn new skills and network with each other and travel PRs, (and I’m the Social Media Manager) I was really inspired to turn The Travel Hack into something valuable to both me and every reader.

Something that has been said in the travel blogging community again and again is that every good blogger needs a niche to make you stand out from the crowd. (Note to all Americans: It’s ‘niche’ not ‘nitch’.)

I’ve been wracking my brains for ages now trying to think what makes me different from every other blogger out there. Is it my travel style? The places I go? The people I travel with? My job in social media or the fact I’m studying journalism? Or is it simply my love for travel, yoga and an obsession with Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, (every flavour except Chunky Monkey – who thought that was a good idea!?)

It wasn’t until I was in a session at TBU with Katja from The Travelettes when she mentioned that fashion bloggers don’t obsess about their niche. They focus on their personalities and what they’re good at and this is what leads to success. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

I’m not a ‘solo female traveller’. I’m not a ‘budget traveller’. I don’t just talk about one destination. My travel style varies like the British weather. Sometimes I travel on a budget with nothing but my passport and toothbrush (OK, and some clean underwear if you’re lucky) but sometimes I splash out on a 5* hotel. Sometimes I look for unique experiences and sometimes I camp in a field. But I’m always looking for something with a spot of style and the affordability factor. There’s nowhere in the world I don’t want to go and there’s nothing I don’t want to do (well, you know, within reason).

So I look forward to sharing more of my travel tales with you, from London and around the world.

Many thanks to Jo, aka a Dexterous Diva, for designing my new header. What do you think of the new design?

Looks great really nice! Congrats! I totally agree with the niche thing. I have found myself in the Solo Female Traveller box just because I am a female the travels solo but it’s not so much what my blog is about. Can’t we just write about travelling?

Absolutely love this George! I didn’t start blogging to think about niches and SEO and all that stuff, I did it to write about travelling and you’ve hit the nail right on the head there!

  2. Love it…for months I struggled with what my “niche” for my blog, and considered changing it’s direction many times. I am all over the place, writing about hotels one day, restaurants another, and maybe golf courses the next. Sure, this probably isn’t great for building a following yada yada yada, but I love it, and won’t have it any other way. Good to know I’m not alone in this thought!

I’m glad I’m not alone in it too! Niche sniche, give me a bit of personality and variety any day 🙂

I’m glad you’ve found “your way”… I thought about my “niche” for many months and realized that, as a gemini, I just can’t stick to one thing – I need change, variety! And so… I’ve stopped looking for a niche 🙂

I’m sure that’s the best way to do it too. If you have regular readers, they like variety too so I’m sure it’s best to write about what you enjoy and that will shine through.

Thanks Kristin! I know it shouldn’t really matter but the design of a blog makes such a difference. Really glad you like it 🙂

Just realized I posted the wrong link to my blog! How embarrassing! :S… Thought I should correct it :).

Great design hun! I agree with the niche dilemma. The trouble is, it limits what you can write about. Most niche bloggers end up writing general posts anyway. I think it’s all about the personality and yours shines through!

Thanks Ari! I hadn’t thought about it that way. Even if you do have a niche, you don’t have to write about that 24/7. Hmm, something to think about 🙂

Loving the new design sweetie, and it sounds like you got a lot out of the Travel Bloggers Unite meeting. And I totally agree that you don’t need a niche, you’ve got tons of friendly personality coming through in your blog – it really shows.

Just discovered your blog and I think that you better be yourself and tell your stories they way you lived it, each style is very unique and finds its readers. The most important is to share, dialogue and enjoy. And as an aspiring journalist, it’s a good start to write a blog 🙂 I am a journalist hehehehe

That’s what I was telling everyone in my journo class for months. Blogging is such a good way to get your name out there!

Hey Monica! I’m sorry to just see this post, but I just wanted to echo other comments and say I love your new header and vision for the blog 🙂 I’m right there with you in just letting myself be my niche – in a way, I think that’s far more natural and relatable than putting ourselves in a box merely for the sake of doing so. Can’t wait to see where your new stylish travels take you! x

Thanks Candace! Really appreciate it and I’m glad that other people feel the same. I don’t want to put myself in a box or label myself as something I’m not, I’m just me 🙂 Happy travels!

The new header is great! Inspiring words of wisdom – “focus on what you’re good at”. I love that!
