I’m going to Iceland!

I’m so excited to announce that in October I’ll be going to Iceland.

I knew I wanted to take a trip in October to somewhere new but I really couldn’t decide where. One of the problems with working in the travel industry and reading lots of travel blogs is that you’re constantly surrounded by travel inspiration. I’m always hearing about new destinations and amazing adventures people have had in places I’d never considered going. Of course, this is a dream job for me but it does make choosing a holiday destination tricky as I quite simply want to go everywhere.

I finally narrowed it down to two destinations: New York or Iceland.

Two very different destinations, I know, but I’ve been told that October is a brilliant time to visit both these places. I asked around for advice and suggestions but almost everyone agreed that it was a tough decision and found it impossible to choose.

After lots of ‘umming’ and ‘arrrhing’ I decided to ask Facebook and left it up to my followers to decide.

There were lots of strong opinions and great reasons to visit both places but in the end Iceland won! Iceland received 19 votes and New York received 12 so I finally bit the bullet and booked two flights to Iceland.

I booked the flights with easyJet for a bargain £150 each which includes luggage and ideal flight times.

I’ve spent the past few weeks researching Iceland and reading loads of amazing travel blogs about the experiences my fellow bloggers have had out there – like this video from Vicky Flip Flop.

My Iceland Itinerary

There is so much to do in Iceland so it was really tough to put together a realistic itinerary.

I’d like to say a massive thanks to the guys behind Where’s My Passport for writing such detailed posts about their trip – it was a massive help for when I was planning my own trip.

Day 1 (My birthday!)

Arrive at Reykjavik airport and collect our car from Blue Car Hire. We’ve got the car for the entire week so we have the flexibility to travel around ourselves and discover Iceland at our own pace.
Visit The Blue Lagoon – relaxation and pampering in The Blue Lagoon sounds like an ideal way to spend my birthday.

Jayne from 40before30 has some great tips for visiting the Blue Lagoon: Bathing in the Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Day 2

Drive around the Golden Circle

Cole from FourJandals has written a really informative guide to the drive: How to Self Drive the Golden Circle in One Day in Iceland

Iceland

Day 3

Silfra snorkelling and swim between two continents.

I’m a little nervous about this as I’m sure it’s going to be the coldest experience of my life but it’s been so long since I’ve been snorkelling or scuba diving so I can’t wait.

Nellie from WildJunket has an amazing account of this experience and her photos look beautiful: Snorkelling between tectonic plates in Iceland.

Day 4 + 5

A two day tour to the south coast and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon with Extreme Iceland.

This looks a-mazing!

Day 6

Fly home

That’s pretty much what I did with the guys from Where’s my Passport. It’s always good to see where other people have been.

  5. So happy for you to come to Iceland. We are on our 2nd month now and are absolutely in love with this county! The glacial lagoon is going to be the most amazing thing you have ever seen. I heard there at the beach is a walrus hanging out. Hope he is still there!!!

Thanks Maddie! It was the cheap flights that finally did it for me. I couldn’t say no to £150 return!

  8. I’m so glad you’re going for six days! I worried when you spoke of a long weekend that it would just be for three or four. From what I’ve read (since I haven’t been yet) Iceland deserves your full attention. I can’t wait to read about your trip! And what a great price!

I am soooo jealous, I went to Iceland just after that unpronounceable volcano erupted and it was absolutely breathtaking. Make sure you stock up on products from The Blue Lagoon, I regret not buying more! Looking forward to the photos! 🙂
