Slumming it in Flores

While travelling, you don’t always get much choice about where you stay. Hence this place….

We arrived in Moni, Flores at 8pm. It was dark, we were tired and could find no other accomodation within walking distance.

We were being hassled by about 15 guys on scooters who wanted to take us to their ‘friend’s, uncle’s, sister’s, daughter’s husband’s hotel’ and we just wanted to find somewhere and go to sleep. This is what we found.

Just looking at these pictures still makes me itch. It was a hot, sweaty little room with a swarm of mossies that buzzed around us all night.

We awoke  at 5am to the kind of thunder and rain that would have scared Noah and inspired him to hurry the hell up with his arc. It pelted down on our flimsy metal roof and I was amazed it was keeping us dry.

I usually love my sleep but I was up and ready to leave by 6am. My backpack was packed and my new  collection of mossie bites were flaming. I don’t think I’ve ever got ready so quickly in my life.

A couple of weeks later we were flashpacking in Kuala Lumpur, pretending we weren’t the poor backpackers we really are.

I’m sure every traveller has a bad experience with accommodation. Anything worse than this?

    >I think I've stayed in worse accommodation in NYC. Though your bathroom looks pretty damn horrid, the NYC hostel had rooms that were only inches larger than a single bed.

Oh, and I just remembered another one (I'd almost blocked it from my memory until now). I stayed in a hunters cabin in New Zealand that had mice crawling all over the bed, roof and floor. We had no choice but to sleep the night because we were on the other side of a waterway and our water taxi wasn't due to pick us up until noon the next day. I cried.

Ahhh! That bathroom looks disgusting. I think I could deal with the squatting toilet if at least it were clean!

It was so gross. Look at the walls around the edge of the bed too! Urgh. There weren’t many bad times while travelling but this was definitely one of them!

[…] My worst was in Indonesia. We’d arrived in Flores really late and didn’t know where to stay so ended up in a horrible little place that was stiflingly hot and filled with mosquitoes and the ‘bathroom’ was filthy. You can see the pictures on my site, it will make your skin crawl! Slumming it in Flores […]
