Photo Essay: A Day in Amsterdam

Yes, that’s right, on Saturday I spent one day in Amsterdam. ‘Why would you bother doing that?’ I’m sure you’re wondering. Well, as you can see, you can do a lot in a day….

Sunny Canals
Amsterdam – Dancing Houses. The houses along the canal were once supported by wooden stilts which led them to wobble like dancing houses. Most of the houses built along the canal now have reinforced concrete foundations that are drilled deep into to the earth so they are safe as, well, safe as houses.
Amsterdam Central Station

Bikes, bridges, canals and tall narrow houses. It doesn't get more stereotypical Amsterdam than this!
The Royal Palace
The Bulldog Coffee Shop in Amsterdam is now famous for the funky art work and you'll find a couple of coffee shops around the city. Remember that there is a difference between a coffee shop and a cafe! If you just want a quick cuppa, go to a cafe.
De Waag is the only medieval fortified gate left in the city. Built in the 14th century, it was once a weigh house and then a guild house and is now a spectacular restaurant/cafe.

How I did it:

I was invited on a Big Bloggers Day Out to take the overnight Stena Line ferry to Holland (more on this to come). We arrived at 7.45am and didn’t leave until 10.30pm which means we had a full day to explore the city.

We also had a brilliant tour guide from Viator meaning we got to see all the highlights and go to the best places. When you only have one day you don’t have time to get lost so this was a great option.

Top Tip: This may be stating the obvious but the best way to get around Amsterdam is by bike and if you don’t have much time it’s pretty much the only option. Bikes are cheap to rent at about 10 euros a day and it’s really safe to ride with plenty of bike lanes.

Amsterdam is such a strange little city – so beautiful and yet so very ugly all at the same time. Your photos captured its beauty, of course, rather than its opposite!

Thanks for your comment Simon. I agree, there are some ugly sides to Amsterdam with the massive sex trade but, weirdly, even the Red Light District is beautiful during the day.

  2. Great post…this is the second time lately I’ve seen pics of The Bulldog, and I don’t remember the outside being decorated like that. We stayed at their hostel upstairs! Oh well, guess I missed it….

I think there’s more than one Bulldog so maybe you stayed in a different one? …or maybe they managed to re-paint it really quickly…?

Gorgeous photos Monica! I really love Amsterdam, and funnily enough I was in Amsterdam at the same time, thou I was there the whole weekend meeting friends. But you do need to spend more than 24h there 😉

D.J: I think the Bulldog has three places on that one street 🙂

Thanks Jarmo. Yea, I’d definitely like to go again and spend a few days. I think a long weekend would be perfect!

Look beautiful lovely – beautiful pictures as always! It’s amazing how much you can do in a day! Amsterdam is definitely on my list of places to visit! xxx

Thanks Jen. I hadn’t realised how gorgeous it is until I got there – definitely worth a visit 🙂

Fab photies – was that the Lindengracht market that you went you? I’ve not been to it myself, but heard it’s really good and draws crowds not just from the local area but across the whole of Amsterdam.
